Synthesis of vinyl acetate from acetylene and acetic acid with fixed-bed reactor

The main feedstock of the process includes acetylene and acetic acid. With a fixed bed catalyst supported by activated carbon, vinyl acetate can be synthesized at 170-220℃ under atmospheric pressure. The process, largely based on China's surplus calcium carbide, was jointly developed by PJCHEM and Chengdu Institute of Organic Chemistry of China Academy of Sciences, and has been successfully applied in the commercial plant of Sinopec Great Wall Energy (Ningxia) Co. Ltd with the biggest capacity in China. Until now, PJCHEM has already authorized two commercial plant with a total capacity of 550 kt.

Technical Features:

  • 1. Low pressure drop and low pressure of the reactor inlet (0.03MpaG)
  • 2. Highly reactive and long lifespan catalyst supported by activated carbon with special configuration, much higher STY than fluidized-bed process
  • 3. Higher acetic acid conversion (75%) of single pass than the fluidized bed process (25-40%)
  • 4. Saving 45% energy during the acetic acid evaporation process with high-integration technology instead of steam
